Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS)

What is the CPMS?

CPMS

The Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) is a platform developed to support the work of the European Reference Networks (ERNs) in diagnosing and treating rare and complex diseases. With the launch of CPMS 2.0, this secure, GDPR-compliant system has taken a significant leap forward, offering enhanced tools and features to improve collaboration among healthcare professionals and ensure the best outcomes for patients with rare diseases.

The CPMS is only open to healthcare professionals.

What Is the Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS)?

The CPMS is an IT platform supervised by the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) of the European Commission. It allows healthcare professionals from different countries to work together on complex cases, sharing expertise and knowledge. This is particularly crucial in rare diseases, where specialist knowledge is often limited to a few experts scattered across Europe.

Key features of the CPMS include:

  • Secure sharing of de-identified patient data to ensure privacy.
  • A built-in medical imaging viewer for sharing and analyzing scans and other diagnostic visuals.
  • Virtual panels for multidisciplinary discussions to develop optimal care plans.

VASCERN’s experts convene virtual panels through the CPMS to share their insights and provide comprehensive recommendations. This collaborative approach ensures that patients benefit from a multidisciplinary team of specialists working together to find the best solutions for complex cases.

The system is accessible exclusively to healthcare professionals, ensuring that sensitive patient data remains secure and under the control of authorized users.

CPMS 2.0: What’s New?

The launch of CPMS 2.0 marks a significant upgrade from the first version, with a range of new features designed to streamline workflows and enhance the user experience. Developed collaboratively by DG SANTE, ERNs, and IBM, the updated system reflects input from healthcare professionals to address their needs better.

1. Simplified Account Setup

With CPMS 2.0, users can now create or access their accounts directly through EU Login, eliminating previous barriers to entry. For existing users, access to the new system is automatic, ensuring a seamless transition.

2. Intuitive Case Submission

Submitting a case has never been easier. CPMS 2.0 simplifies the process with an intuitive interface that allows healthcare professionals to quickly enter patient information and share relevant data.

3. Enhanced Meeting Functions

The new system introduces robust tools for hosting and managing meetings, including:

  • Dedicated sessions for individual patient cases or broader care discussions.
  • An upgraded video conferencing tool for smoother virtual meetings.
  • Options to invite experts from other ERNs directly to the discussion.
  • Linked calendar invites for easy scheduling of patient case reviews.
  • Meeting recording capabilities to document key discussions.

4. Strengthened Data Privacy Controls

Patient privacy is a top priority in CPMS 2.0. Only the enrolling clinician and their designated assistant can access patient information, ensuring tighter control over sensitive data.

5. New Communication Tools

The addition of a chat function allows for quick and informal communication among team members. This feature promotes real-time collaboration and faster decision-making.

6. Customizable Notifications

Users can now manage their notification settings, choosing to receive updates in-app, via email, or both. This flexibility ensures that users stay informed without being overwhelmed.

7. Mobile Access with Dedicated Apps

CPMS 2.0 introduces dedicated mobile applications for Android and Apple devices, enabling users to access the platform on the go. Whether reviewing a case or participating in a virtual panel, healthcare professionals can stay connected anytime, anywhere.

Why CPMS 2.0 Matters for Rare Disease Care

Rare diseases are inherently challenging to diagnose and manage due to their low prevalence and complexity. Many patients wait years for a diagnosis, during which their conditions may worsen. The CPMS addresses these challenges by:

  1. Connecting Experts Across Borders: Specialists can share knowledge and expertise, ensuring that no patient is left without access to expert care.
  2. Facilitating Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Complex cases benefit from input across disciplines, ensuring comprehensive care planning.
  3. Enhancing Patient Outcomes: By streamlining case discussions and decision-making, CPMS 2.0 helps healthcare professionals provide faster and more effective care.

The CPMS has already transformed care for many patients across Europe. By enabling real-time collaboration among experts, it has provided solutions to cases that would have been nearly impossible to resolve otherwise.
