JARDIN
The JARDIN project—short for Joint Action on Integration of European Reference Networks into National Healthcare Systems—was launched in February 2024 and runs until January 2027. It is co-funded by the European Union under the EU4Health Programme. It brings together all EU Member States, Norway, and Ukraine with the goal of embedding the European Reference Networks into routine national healthcare delivery.
While ERNs were created to support cross-border collaboration in rare and complex diseases, their real-world integration into national health systems remains uneven. JARDIN addresses this gap by developing practical tools, frameworks, and policies that help national authorities align with ERN objectives in a way that fits their local context.
Coordinated by the Spanish Ministry of Health and supported by more than 80 institutions, JARDIN is backed by a total budget of €18.75 million.

Key Objectives
- Support national implementation: Develop adaptable frameworks and tools to integrate ERNs into national health systems in line with each country’s needs.
- Enhance clinical pathways: Streamline access to ERN expertise and cross-border care.
- Strengthen support for healthcare providers: Offer policy recommendations to ensure long-term engagement in ERN activities.
- Improve data use: Facilitate the safe and effective exchange of health data across borders.
- Increase awareness: Promote understanding of ERNs among professionals, patients, and policymakers.
Conclusion
JARDIN represents a significant step toward ensuring that the benefits of European Reference Networks are accessible to all patients across Europe. By aligning policies, sharing expertise, and improving coordination at both national and EU levels, the project aims to build a more connected and equitable healthcare system for people living with rare and complex conditions.
