The European Rare Disease Research Alliance (ERDERA) has just introduced a new opportunity to support collaboration in rare disease and rare cancer research: the Networking Support Scheme (NSS). This funding call is open on a rolling basis and is designed to help connect researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates across Europe.

With up to €30,000 available per event, the NSS makes it easier for teams to organize workshops, meetings, or hybrid conferences that foster knowledge sharing and joint initiatives. The first review of applications will happen shortly after the 7 October 2025 deadline, so successful applicants can get started quickly.

What the scheme offers

Through this scheme, ERDERA will fund key costs related to organizing networking events—things like venue hire, travel, digital meeting platforms, and speaker support. Funding rounds will take place every six months until April 2029, or until the available budget is used up.

The goal is to provide flexible, timely support for new or growing collaborations that focus on advancing rare disease or rare cancer research.

Who can apply

The NSS is open to a wide range of applicants, including:

  • Researchers at any career stage
  • Clinicians and healthcare professionals
  • Research managers
  • Patient advocacy groups

To qualify, each event must involve participants from at least three different ERDERA countries and focus on knowledge exchange related to rare diseases or rare cancers. Events can be held in person or in hybrid formats to reach a broader audience.

Widening participation across Europe

One of the scheme’s priorities is inclusiveness. ERDERA is actively encouraging applicants from 18 underrepresented countries, such as Bulgaria, Poland, Greece, Romania, and Türkiye, to take part. By promoting participation from these regions, the program aims to strengthen rare disease research networks in areas that have had fewer opportunities in the past.

Evaluation Process

Applications go through a two-step process:

  1. Eligibility Screening – Proposals are first checked against basic eligibility criteria.
  2. Evaluation Committee Review – Qualified proposals are scored by a transnational, independent evaluation panel, using transparent metrics aligned with Horizon Europe standards.

Once approved, successful applicants receive rapid confirmation, allowing them to begin organizing their events without unnecessary delays.

How to apply

Full details, including application guidelines, evaluation criteria, and a list of eligible countries, are available on the ERDERA website. If you’re planning a rare disease or rare cancer networking event, consider applying before the first deadline on 7 October 2025.

Through this new scheme, ERDERA is helping to build the relationships and collaborations that will shape the future of rare disease research—not just in Europe, but worldwide.
