The European Commission has launched CPMS 2.0, a groundbreaking IT platform aimed at transforming cross-border medical collaboration for rare and complex diseases. Funded by the EU4Health programme, CPMS 2.0 replaces the original system introduced in 2017, providing an enhanced, patient-focused, and GDPR-compliant solution for the European Reference Networks (ERNs).
A Game-Changer for Rare Disease Care
Designed to enable remote multidisciplinary case discussions, CPMS 2.0 allows clinicians across Member States to collaborate seamlessly, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for expert consultations. Its secure, user-friendly interface enhances coordination among specialists, ensuring that rare disease patients receive timely and accurate care.
One of the most innovative aspects of CPMS 2.0 is its open-source code, which lays the foundation for the development of similar IT systems at the national level. These systems could expand beyond rare diseases, providing Member States with a cost-effective solution to enable remote discussions among healthcare professionals.
Strengthening the European Reference Networks
The European Reference Networks (ERNs) are critical to addressing the challenges of rare and complex diseases. These 24 networks connect Europe’s leading healthcare providers and researchers, enabling collaboration on cases requiring highly specialized expertise.
Already, one-third of the ERNs have transitioned to CPMS 2.0, with more networks set to follow in the coming weeks. The new platform empowers ERNs to continue their mission of improving the diagnosis, treatment, and management of rare diseases, making high-quality care more accessible across borders.
Driving Innovation in Patient-Centric Care
With its robust features and secure design, CPMS 2.0 is a major step forward for patient-centered care. The platform allows clinicians to discuss complex cases in a virtual environment, ensuring that patients benefit from the collective expertise of Europe’s top specialists without the burden of unnecessary travel.
Paving the Way for Future Solutions
CPMS 2.0 not only supports rare disease collaboration but also sets the stage for future healthcare innovation. Its open-source code provides a scalable solution that Member States can adapt for broader medical use, extending its benefits to non-rare diseases and creating new opportunities for remote care delivery.
